18th Century Irish Antique Oak Cutlery / Knife Box, circa 1770 – Georgian Domestic Form

A rare 18th-century Irish antique oak cutlery box, crafted with a sloped lid and void interior. This tactile domestic object reflects the Georgian period’s emphasis on order, craftsmanship, and utility.

Usually, knife and cutlery boxes of the 18th Century are, in the main, made from mahogany and walnut.

Made unusually from solid oak with nailed and pegged construction and a rich, oxidised surface, the box features a slanted top and unfitted interior. Originally designed to hold knives or flatware, the interior fittings are now missing. Regardless of this, its form is both practical and sculptural, with subtle chamfers and early tool marks. The box is supported on an associated, detachable, pentagonal plinth base with raised bracket feet. The original exterior metal fittings also remain.

Irish examples of this type are notably scarce, often made for manor kitchens or dining rooms where presentation and storage were equally valued.

A fine survivor of Georgian domestic life — ideal for collectors of Irish antiques, kitchenalia, or early oak furniture.

Provenance: Ireland. 18th century.

Condition: There is surface wear commensurate with age.  Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: Width 30.5 cm x Depth 28 cm x Height 55 cm (12" x 11" x 21 1/2")
