Early 18th Century English Antique Oak, Yew & Fruitwood Inlaid Spice Cupboard
An early 18th-century oak, yew and fruitwood inlaid ‘spice’ cupboard.
English origin.
Of boarded construction, with a plank top, the single raised-panelled door with a brass escutcheon and knob, the centre inlaid with a large central starburst, conforming spandrels, and all framed by yew wood crossbanding.
The door opens to reveal an interior with a single shelf.
The interplay of native timbers — warm fruitwood, rich yew, and sturdy oak — reflects regional craftsmanship and Georgian sensibilities. Its compact form and decorative inlay suggest it was both functional and a point of pride within the household.
A rare survival with excellent patina and structural integrity, this cupboard offers collectors a glimpse into early 18th-century domestic life and English vernacular furniture.
Provenance: England. 18th century.
Condition - as per the images. The is evidence that the interior was originally compartmentalised; however, the dividers have been removed historically. A further condition report is available upon request.
