17th Century Spanish Antique Leather-Bound Travelling Trunk or Chest

A charming and beautifully aged 17th-century Spanish antique travelling trunk or chest, constructed with a wooden carcass and bound in russet-toned leather.

The exterior is decorated with brass studwork in geometric patterns, evoking both protection and ornament. The domed lid lifts to reveal a spacious interior, once used to carry personal effects across long distances — perhaps by a merchant, soldier, or noble traveller. The lid is inscribed with the name of the original owner, "D TOMASA PABOLLETA". We may never discover who this individual was or their vocation.

The leather has developed a rich patina over centuries, with wear and character that speak to its journeys. A rare and evocative piece of early luggage, equally suited to display or imaginative reuse in a refined interior.

Provenance: Spain. 17th century.

Condition -The trunk has seen life! There is surface wear to the leather surface as one would expect; however, this has remained relatively intact. One carry handle is missing. The lock and hasp remain, although they no longer function.

Size: Width 102 cm x Depth 54 cm x Height 40 cm (40 1/4" x 21 1/4" x 15 1/2")
