15th Century Flemish Carved Wooden Head of Christ – Life-size Sculpture with Crown of Thorns

A large, life-size 15th-century Flemish carved wooden sculpture depicting the head of Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns. This deeply expressive devotional carving captures the moment of Christ’s Passion with remarkable pathos and spiritual intensity.

Carved in the round from a single block of hardwood, the sculpture features finely rendered facial features, flowing hair, and a deeply incised crown of thorns. The surface bears traces of original polychrome and gilding, now softened by centuries of devotional use and atmospheric wear. The reverse is hollowed, suggesting it may have once formed part of a larger crucifixion group or architectural setting.

A rare and moving survival of late medieval religious art — ideal for collectors of ecclesiastical sculpture, Flemish Gothic works, or museum-quality devotional objects.

Provenance: Low Countries. 15th century. Acquired from a private collection in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. Purchased by the previous owner from an antique shop whilst travelling in France many years ago.

With traces of original polychromy.

Condition - as per the images. The sculpture displays well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: Height 43 cm x Width 33 cm x Depth 19 cm (16 3/4" x 13" x  7 1/2")
